1870 Magoffin County Census (Annotated)
The 1870 census of Magoffin County was conducted by enumerator W.W. Howes, beginning on 29 June 1870 and concluding on 1 September 1870. This census provides a valuable snapshot of the community just five years after the end of the Civil War, capturing details about residents’ names, ages, occupations, property holdings, and places of birth.
Unlike modern censuses, much of the process in 1870 was manual and varied from one enumerator to another. Workers supplied their own paper, and record sizes could range from small slips to large sheets several feet long.
This transcription, prepared by Scott Matheson, preserves the original spellings and formats found on the microfilm, providing researchers with a faithful representation of the historical record.
